POMEROL, HERZOG & DE MEURON

Second film of a series of documentaries which looks at everyday life inside the spaces designed by some of the world’s greatest contemporary architects. Following the film Koolhaas HouseLife, which explored the Maison à Bordeaux by Rem Koolhaas from the point of view of daily life and the upkeep of the building, this new film will take us to the party atmosphere of mealtime among the grape-pickers in the dining hall designed by Herzog & de Meuron in Pomerol for the Jean-Pierre Moueix vineyard.

In 1995 Christian and Chérise Moueix asked Herzog and de Meuron to build the important cellars for their California vineyard: Dominus. The building was such an outstanding architectural success that the couple decided to turn once more to Herzog & de Meuron for another project, this time for their prestigious vineyards in the Bordeaux area, including the Château Pétrus, Trotanoy, Hosanna, Lafleur-Pétrus, Providence and others.

The original project involved meeting and tasting rooms, accommodation areas for the head of the grape-pickers, kitchens and a large canteen catering for about one hundred people at breakfast, lunch and dinner during the two-week harvest period. The architects chose the old stables belonging to Château Pétrus as a space to transform and expand, incorporating a long concrete wall into the old building.

In order to admire the distinctive features and traits of this building we decided to visit it during this crucial phase in its lifecycle and to mix with the grape-pickers as they went about their usual activities, joining them at the mealtimes and celebrations marking the long days of this period of hard work. We followed them all the time during the two-week harvest.
